This is a review of a treatment for canker sores called Orajel Mouth Sore Gel. Canker sores can cause immense discomfort when eating, drinking, swallowing, chewing or talking and can take as long as two weeks to heal. If you are prone to canker sores, this review is for you as the manufacturer promises a maximum strength product that gives you the fastest relief.
Canker sores form on the soft tissue on the inside of the mouth. Unlike cold sores, they are not caused by a virus. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes virus and they sit on the outside of the mouth. Canker sores are tiny cuts or ulcers that appear thanks to stress, spicy foods, dental treatments, fatigue and the flu. Acidic foods can also cause these lacerations. Low immunity levels and low Vitamin B12 levels in particular can also lead to canker sores.
What’s In Orajel Mouth Sore Gel?
Each ingredient fulfills a different function:
- Benzalkonium Chloride 0.2% – An antiseptic to prevent further infection or complications.
- Benzocaine 20% – Essentially, a pain killer. This ingredient takes away the pain associated with these lacerations.
- Zinc chloride 0.1% – An astringent that helps the wound heal and close.
The gel therefore disinfects the wound, blocks the pain and discomfort, and then and heals the wound so it can close.
The formulation is unique and the working on the three ingredients makes sense from a clinical perspective. You may experience some stinging or burning when applying the gel. Our research indicates that this gel will bring swift relief, but it is not a long-term deterrent to canker sores forming. Long-term cures would have to address vitamin deficiencies as well, among other issues.
How Do You Use Orajel?
There is a marking at the tip of the tube where you need to cut it. Then, apply a small amount to a clean finger and onto the sore. Use up to 4 times a day. Give it to children under close supervision. If your child is under 2, consult a paediatrician first.
Do not use this product if you have an allergy to procaine, butacaine or benzocaine, or any other ‘caine’ anesthetics.
The Cost
The gel is available for purchase at $6.74 on Amazon. We also noted some coupon offers on the product website at the time of compiling this review which may result in you being able to buy it at a discount.
Is There a Guarantee?
We did not find any evidence of a money-back or returns pledge.
The Conclusion Of Our Orajel Mouth Sore Gel Review
This is a strong formula which probably meets its stated objectives. The approach of sterilising the wound, dulling the pain and then contracting it makes scientific sense. The fact that the product is not too costly is a plus.
This is neither a natural or long-term remedy though. The product receives some great, some average and some indifferent reviews. We feel it is good as a quick fix – but only if you are willing to take the risk as there is no clearly stated guarantee policy. If you have recurring canker sores, we advise a product with naturally soothing elements, and one that will give you the long-term vitamin boost needed to increase your mouth immunity.
